I try to look at my coins sideways or upside down when looking at something of that nature. My brain tends to focus on the form rather than the function when I see things like that.

I see what you are talking about… might look at it under a loop or microscope to see if there is any spread or definitive movement of the metal that would be caused by stamping. But I am still thinking that it is a combination of post mint damage and toning.
